The Challenge
Remarkably, Winthrop Center currently stands as the world's largest certified Passive House office building, a testament to its’ developers’ commitment to energy efficiency.
Spanning over 1.8 million sq. ft., Winthrop Center is an embodiment of state-of-the-art residential, office, and public space. It’s not just a building; it's envisioned to be a year-round gathering hub featuring regular events, art shows, and farmers' markets, complemented by a wide array of retail establishments and eateries.
With the lofty sustainability goals, the tower’s unitized curtain wall was key to construction. Ensuring an impenetrable seal is crucial in any building design, but even more so for one attaining Passive House certification.
So when supply issues for construction products critical to the unitized curtain wall arose during construction, it could have had a significant impact.
The Solution – Supply Chain Issues Solved
Garvin emerged as the reliable solution to the supply-chain issues Karas & Karas Glass Co., Inc., encountered while constructing Winthrop Center’s unitized curtain wall.
Garvin suggested and supplied mission-critical building materials and construction solutions – structural silicone and bonding tape. Support from Garvin helped to keep the project on its timeline.
The Results – A Completed Project with Sustainability In Mind
Garvin was able to work with Karas to supply equal alternatives to their original supplies so the project schedule wasn’t impacted, and the build quality wasn’t compromised.
Our recommendations for the Winthrop Center project exemplifies our dedication to providing high-quality construction supplies.
Expected to use about half the energy of its neighbors, Winthrop Center's environmentally conscious design aspects will significantly contribute to sustainability. It’s poised to not only help Boston achieve its climate targets, but also inspire future responsible building practices.
